![]() Effective management is particularly critical in low-income settings where scarce resources must be carefully stewarded and efficiently deployed to meet the substantial health needs of the population. Competencies of health management include strategic thinking and problem solving, human resource management, financial management, operations management, performance management and accountability, governance and leadership, political analysis and dialogue, and customer and community assessment and engagement. The results suggest that district-level management may provide an opportunity for improving health system performance in low-income country settings.ĭeveloping management and problem-solving capacity at all levels is fundamental to health systems strengthening. Having more staff at the district health office was also associated with better KPI performance (p < 0.05) but only in districts with above median management capacity. In districts with below median management capacity, health center management capacity was not associated with KPI performance. In districts with above median district management capacity, health center management capacity was strongly associated (p < 0.05) with KPI performance. We employed quantitative measure of management capacity at both the district health office and health center levels and used multiple regression models, accounting for clustering of health centers within districts, to estimate the statistical association between management capacity and a key performance indicator (KPI) summary score based on antenatal care coverage, contraception use, skilled birth attendance, infant immunization, and availability of essential medications. ![]() To explore this gap, we conducted a cross-sectional study of 36 rural districts and 226 health centers in Ethiopia, a country which has made ambitious investment in expanding access to primary care over the last decade. Strengthening district-level management may be an important lever for improving key public health outcomes in low-income settings however, previous studies have not established the statistical associations between better management and primary healthcare system performance in such settings.

A British national, Scott was born in Tanganyika, now Tanzania, where she was raised speaking English and Swahili, before moving to live in Ghana, West Africa. The name jenga is derived from kujenga, a Swahili word which means 'to build'. Jenga was created by Leslie Scott, the co-founder of Oxford Games Ltd, based on a game that evolved within her family in the early 1970s using children's wooden building blocks the family purchased from a sawmill in Takoradi, Ghana. The last player to complete a turn before the collapse is the winner. The game ends when any portion of the tower collapses, caused by either the removal of a block or its new placement. A turn ends when the next player in sequence touches the tower or when 10 seconds have elapsed since the placement of a block, whichever occurs first. A block may be touched or nudged to determine whether it is loose enough to remove without disturbing the rest of the tower, but it must be returned to its original position if the player decides to move a different one. Once a level contains three blocks, it is complete and may not have any more blocks added to it. Each player may use only one hand to touch the tower or move a block at any given time, but may switch hands whenever desired. Starting with the one who built the tower, players take turns removing one block from any level below the highest completed one and placing it horizontally atop the tower, perpendicular to any blocks on which it is to rest. A plastic tray provided with the game can be used to assist in setup. The blocks within each layer are oriented in the same direction, with their long sides touching, and are perpendicular to the ones in the layer immediately below. To begin the game, the blocks are stacked into a solid rectangular tower of 18 layers, with three blocks per layer. Blocks have small, random variations from these dimensions so as to create imperfections in the stacking process and make the game more challenging. Each block is three times as long as it is wide, and one fifth as thick as its length – 1.5 cm × 2.5 cm × 7.5 cm (0.59 in × 0.98 in × 2.95 in). Each block removed is then placed on top of the tower, creating a progressively more unstable structure. Players take turns removing one block at a time from a tower constructed of 54 blocks. Jenga is a game of physical skill created by British board game designer and author Leslie Scott and marketed by Hasbro. And if it does, you’ll be a Jenga legend.Manual dexterity, eye–hand coordination, precision, and strategy This will decrease the normal force between them, as well as the frictional force.īold move? Sure. If you push the middle block ever so slightly up, you can move the upper stack up a little bit. The second trick is considerably more difficult, but it’s worth a shot. Couple it with the larger mass of the upper block, and there’s a decent chance it doesn’t move fast enough to topple over. If you make this push last only a fraction of a second, then the frictional force on the upper block doesn’t have enough time to get it moving. ![]() The million-dollar question, then, is how do you pull off the impossible move? You have two tricks at your disposal. If you aren’t careful, it will accelerate right off the top of the stack and tumble. That means there’s a horizontal force on the top block, and this force causes the block to accelerate. ![]() For every force, there’s an equal and opposite force. Yes, forces are an interaction between two things. How to Solve the Infuriating Viral Math Problem. How to Jump From a Moving Train Using Science. Now for the real problem: It’s not just that you have to push harder to get this block to accelerate-it’s that with a frictional force between the two blocks, there’s also a frictional force on the top block. You have to push that much harder to accelerate the block. There’s also a frictional force between the top and middle block. With a greater normal force, there’s a much greater frictional force. This means that the bottom surface has to push up with an even greater magnitude. So what makes this middle block so difficult? Well, since there’s a block on top (or many blocks), there’s an extra downward pushing force. Finally, there’s the backwards-pushing frictional force. This is called a “normal” force, since normal means perpendicular. Both the stack above and below the middle block push on it in a direction perpendicular to the surface. Next, there are the two interactions with the surfaces. The gravitational force (the weight) is the downward pulling force due to an interaction with the Earth. ![]() One day her world is rocked when the manuscript of a soon-to-be-published novel is delivered to her home the manuscript is from her first husband Edward (Jake Gyllenhaal), and as Hutton is away on business, Susan decides to read it. But doesn’t Ford help perpetuate conventional standards of beauty through his career as a fashion designer? “It certainly wasn’t fat-shaming - if anything, it’s a celebration of the beauty of their bodies, and a challenge to what we think of beauty,” he said. In the end, it’s one of Ford’s favorite sequences for exactly that reason. She’s being who she thinks she needs to be: I need to live this way, I need to look like that.” They had let go of what our culture had said they’re supposed to be, and because of that, they were so totally free. They were so uninhibited, and I realized that actually, they were a microcosm of what the whole film was saying. I found them so beautiful, so joyful, and so happy to be there. ![]() That all changed when Ford showed up to the nude shoot “and fell in love with these women,” he said, admitting, “I actually felt guilty that that had been my original intention. So, guess what? I want to talk about America today: Gluttonous, overfed, aging, sad, tired.” America was always tan, beautiful teeth, tits and ass. And I remembered that great poster that I had hanging in my room when I was a kid, when I thought I was straight, of Farrah Fawcett in that red bathing suit. “Politics being what they are right now, I want to make a statement about America. “I’ve lived in Europe for the last 27 years, so I thought, What do I want to say if I’m having a gallery show in America?” mused Ford. Though nearly all the art in the film was on loan from real-world artists - “I don’t like a movie that’s about the art world that doesn’t have real art,” said Ford, “because you can always tell” - the director shot the nude women himself, adopting the imaginary persona of a foreign artist with an axe to grind. So there were a lot of different reasons for that sequence, and not least of all, it grabs the audience at the very beginning and gets them into the story.” “They’re the Valkyrie in a sense, casting a spell on the entire film. “The whole thing is a bit of a fairy tale, and they’re sort of the witches leading you in,” Ford began. Yesterday, I sat down with Ford and asked him to explain what he had in mind. “I’d rather Tom Ford didn’t use fat nude bodies as avant garde gimmicks until he casts a similarly sized person as a person,” tweeted NPR’s Linda Holmes, while writer Jen McDonnell liked the film but still had qualms about “the fat-shaming opening credits BS.” Indeed, in a film full of movie stars at their most lithe and toned, the sequence stands out all the more. It’s eventually revealed that we’re watching video art on display at a gallery opening engineered by wealthy, disaffected art maven Susan (played by Adams), but the attention-grabbing sequence left a bad taste in the mouths of some viewers here at the Toronto Film Festival, where the film had its North American premiere this week. A revenge thriller toplined by Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal, Nocturnal Animals opens not on its stars but with a montage of nude, obese women dancing in slow motion as glitter flutters all around them. After three decades of working in the fashion industry, Tom Ford understands the power of a provocative image - and the opening-credits sequence of his new movie Nocturnal Animals may be the designer-filmmaker’s most controversial creative choice yet. ![]() This results in a ski that is quite light, and about a 7/10 on a scale of soft to firmĪs much as it pained me to do so I sought out a few groomers to test these out. With a good set of supple, tubeless tires inflated lower than you might normally set them, the Scribes can be quite a comfortable wheelset on good roads and bad. While we weigh more or less the same, the winds were highly variable during our spring testing perhaps leading to our different reactions. Miles had a better experience, finding the sidewinds didn’t affect him much, and performed better than others he’s tested. When I got hit by gusts, I couldn’t hold it. Short kickers of 7-10% really slow you down.įor me, the aero wheelset analogy extends to my need to also lean these Scribes into steady sidewinds to stay on my line. Rolling courses with long yet modest hills make you work hard on the Scribe Aero. When the road pitches up, both of us found the wheels struggled, as do many aero wheelsets. For me, more of a B group rider without the turbo boost power of a racer like Miles, their response felt more like a slower reacting, more typical aero wheelset. If you’ve got the watts of a racer like Miles, these Scribes are responsive and fast enough to cover most any accelerations. They are also plenty stiff enough to give you the confidence to lean into a corner, ride through it, and power out at high speeds. My fellow tester Miles heard the comments too from those in his group when free coasting on fast downhill sections.Īnd yes, I tried to quiet the hub using the grease and video instructions Scribe sent me for that purpose. Other riders told me not to coast near them, based on their hand motions because I couldn’t hear them, at least until I started pedaling again. I’m not talking about what you hear coming out of the latest generation DT Swiss 240 freehub or the louder yet distinctive chordal sound of a Chris King R45 freehub. If you really don’t like the sound of a really loud freehub when coasting, the Scribe Aero Wide+ 50-D wheelset really isn’t for you. ![]() Today, there are tons of options for handheld tuners.
